Automatic snow depth probe

This device measures the snow depth and records it on a data logger for later down-loading directly to a computer. The measurement is made by means of a sliding basket and magneto-strictive device. Each depth is time-tagged. We have been able to make several thousand snow depth measurements in a few hours using the device. It's accuracy is better than a millimeter, with adjustable settings that can be used to correct for cratering if the snow is soft and the sliding basket sinks in. Proven over the past 9 years in the Arctic, Antarctic and mountain snow pack of Colorado!
